I created a new subsite using the free structured template. Went to the Project Tasks and opened with MS Project Pro 2016. I then go to Save and Sync. The first dialog I get is “This task list is linked to a different project plan….” Click on OK and then I get “Sorry, we couldn’t save your document to the specified location….” The rest of this last dialog talks about permissions to save the document to the dialog and Site Assets. I currently have Site Collection Admin rights (but my SharePoint guys want to give me “just enough” permissions) and the Site Assets library exists. If I use an existing Project file, it does do the sync but does not save the mpp file to the SharePoint site with the same error as above.
What is set up incorrectly or what am I doing wrong. When I used the free template at another organization a few years ago, I did not have these issues.

Thanks for reaching out. Apologies for the delay in our response. You would need Full Control permissions in the Site Assets folder.
Could you have a look to see if permission inheritance is broken at that level? That may be the case here.
Also, Microsoft has a Blog post that outlines potential corrections: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2812235/saving-mpp-to-sharepoint-site-from-project-fails
Hope this helps. Let us know how it works out.
